Ginger - I've used 40W, 60W, 75W and all the way up to 300W. It depends on what you're shooting, but 60W should be fine. It's really a matter of the color spectrum, not necessarily brightness. I hope that helps.

Hi Jason
I am looking at replacing my 160 gb HD with a new seagate 1 TB. The HD I'm replacing is a 1.5 gigabit link speed with a 6 gigabit speed model Is there any compatibility issues or am I good to go?

Hi Jason,

Great article. Thanks! Any instructions on how to set up the software side of things. I want to drop a ~250gb SSD in my optical bay as a boot/scratch disk and get a new 750GB internal drive for storage/working library. How do you set this up?

Many thanks for the guide, Jason. My trusty early iMac 2006 (nearly six years young) is now happily running a 128GB SSD thanks to your instructions. It's like it has a new lease of life.

Entering the Mac World via a friends "early 2006" iMac. I'd like to upgrade the hard drive and this seems like a good guide. There is nothing of mine on the current hard drive. I bought a copy of OS X Snow Leopard. Assuming a successful disk swap would I simply do an new install with the Snow Leopard disk?

Wish me luck on my switch to Apple.

Mysla,

For the most efficient switch, format the external/blank/target drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with Disk Utility, then clone the hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then just pop the new/cloned drive into the iMac and boot up. It should start right up. Cloning copies everything - every file, every setting, every app - exactly as it was on your original drive, so will it be on the new/cloned drive.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one searching the internet for how to do this! When I originally checked, "Jean L" from above just posted 5 mins. prior! I'm glad I read this article.

I took a mixture of advice from above for materials and construction and put together something that I really like. I have some daylight CFL bulbs and I went to town. I'm not really a photographer, but after messing around with the white balance settings (and others), I got nearly the exact effect I was going for! The only thing I need to adjust is a light source from above like in the pictures shown above.

Thanks Jason, a great idea that works really well for the at home blogger!
