Many thanks for the guide, Jason. My trusty early iMac 2006 (nearly six years young) is now happily running a 128GB SSD thanks to your instructions. It's like it has a new lease of life.

Entering the Mac World via a friends "early 2006" iMac. I'd like to upgrade the hard drive and this seems like a good guide. There is nothing of mine on the current hard drive. I bought a copy of OS X Snow Leopard. Assuming a successful disk swap would I simply do an new install with the Snow Leopard disk?

Wish me luck on my switch to Apple.

Mysla,

For the most efficient switch, format the external/blank/target drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with Disk Utility, then clone the hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then just pop the new/cloned drive into the iMac and boot up. It should start right up. Cloning copies everything - every file, every setting, every app - exactly as it was on your original drive, so will it be on the new/cloned drive.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one searching the internet for how to do this! When I originally checked, "Jean L" from above just posted 5 mins. prior! I'm glad I read this article.

I took a mixture of advice from above for materials and construction and put together something that I really like. I have some daylight CFL bulbs and I went to town. I'm not really a photographer, but after messing around with the white balance settings (and others), I got nearly the exact effect I was going for! The only thing I need to adjust is a light source from above like in the pictures shown above.

Thanks Jason, a great idea that works really well for the at home blogger!

Hi Jason

Your instruction gave me high hope to fix my imac by myself!
My question for now is after you change the hard drive,
do you need to install os x before cloning the old drive to a new one?
I am not familiar with cloning the hard drive. What does it do?
Does it clone everything including 3rd party softwares and os x?

Best

Hi James - not a daft Q at all. So long as the 1TB drive is SATA like the iMac, you can put the drive in your iMac and let the OS X install DVD format it for you. At first it'll probably say that the drive isn't recognized, etc., but if you open Disk Utility from the install process, you can select that 1TB drive, format it as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and GUID, and then continue installing OS X. You can also format it externally and then put it in. Whatever you prefer.

Good luck! BTW, you may want to make sure your 2007 iMac can handle 1TB. Some maxed out at 500GB or 750GB. Ye olde tech back then.

Might be a daft question. But I want to put a 1TB drive that I have taken out of a NAS into my iMac 20" (~2007). Question - the drive currently has a bunch of data on it windows format, do I have to format it first? OR can I just bung it in and the iMac will allow me to format it then?

FYI - don't need the data that's currently on the 1TB. Also want to clean install, not clone the current data on the mac drive.

Some of my shots turned out great, a little dark or bluish but easily fixed with my computer software. Some are terribly blue, green, or orange and cannot be fixed in my photo program, even if they looked fine in the camera viewfinder. Color is really important in what I'm doing. My next step is to figure out how to set the white balance on the camera, and look for a gray card. Grateful for the help on this thread! Thanks, all!!!

I didn't like the prices on the CFL bulbs, so I got 100 watt Reveal bulbs. I made my box bigger because my products are bigger and I might want to photograph sets instead of single items.

Foamboard: I got my foam board pieces at JoAnn Fabrics. They cut them for me, and I paid 1/3 of what I would have spent for smaller pieces at the office store.

Light Bulbs: I got mine at Walmart for 1/4 the price I would have paid at the office store.

White Duct Tape: I got it at Walmart and paid 1/2 what I would have spent at the office store.

Nothing against the office store, they have the best prices on some items, just not these.

I'll post again after I've finished taking some pictures and report on the bulbs I used.

Thanks so much for this article! :)

HFM - While I had the dual SSD setup, I found that the battery life was only reduced by about 10-15 minutes per charge. I was still able to run at least 5-7 hours per charge (40% brightness). Of course, it depends on what you're doing on the laptop, but the second SSD really doesn't produce any drag.

Hey Geoff,

I would recommend going with a nice 500GB 7200RPM drive or even one of the new 500GB hybrid drives that uses a small SSD inside for OS/app speed and a 7200RPM section for massive storage. Newegg.com has them; like this one.

Hey Jason, what new 7200RMP drive did you switch to (a couple months back)? I'm looking to upgrade my 2008 2.4GHZ MacBook Pro's 200GB drive out to something MUCH larger. I've only got 10GB left and thats because I recently cleaned it up. I am running out of room FAST. Also, what have you been using to clone your drive?

Hi Jason,
iMAC 4.1 early 2006 model. Everytime I start my iMac, I get a blank screen with Folder with a question mark in it. I changed the HD to 500GB 3.5" SATA 7200RPM HDD and DDR2 800Mhz SODIMM 1GB RAM.

Result after changing:
Unable to install MAC Os X Tiger using installation disk. The installer is unable to detect the new HD on the "Select a Destination". When I got into Disk Utility trying to format, I faced the same issue of not able to detect the new HD.
I then ran the AHT, and error 4SNS/1/40000001:VDOR was detected.
I seek your assistance to help me solve my iMAC problem.

Funny, I was about to buy myself one, and then I saw my Unibody Macbook Pro (late 2008) came with one. (Back then I opted for the "faster" Drive. However, the largest one back in the day was 320 GB. So this means, I already got the fast stuff inside, so I would not notice any difference. Gotta wait for the next generation until next summer with no upgrade. :(

This is great but I'd have to use diffusers as well because of those hard shadows.
But this is a great for such a simple set up.

My intel iMac 17" with 160 GB HD, which I bought 7 years ago, died, and I was told it's a vintage model and cannot be fixed so I bought a new iMac. I took the 160GB hard drive out of my old Mac and want to see if I can transfer my photos and music and some other documents and possibly use it as an external drive as a back up. I am in the medical field and know nothing about computers. How do i do this?
