This fix isn’t reliable. I deleted the Finder pref file and things went back to normal temporarily. But a day later, I’m having the same trouble. So I’m neither sure that deleting that file is a temporary solution to the problem, nor am I sure that this is a bug related to upgrading from previous versions.

According to Apple, it is a bug with upgraded Snow Leopard. Clearly not everyone is having the same trouble, but logically there’s some similarity of config shared by systems that are experiencing this annoying bug.
As for the com.apple.finder.plist solution, time has shown that it’s not really a permanent fix. It’s a temp solution till Apple gets a patch to whatever the heck is going on. The final word I got from Apple was that a fresh installation would/should fix it permanently. I just did that at 3am and so far so good.

Hi Jason,
SnowLeopard has been a large disappointment so far.
MS Office 2008 for iMac, iWork ’09, and QuickTime are inaccessible.
Final Cut Express wants something that does not exist, but if ‘continue’ is pressed, it is okay.
After emptying ‘the trash’, it is always full when the machine is turned on later.
So the only thing it is worth using it for right now is to go surfing.
